Fic: White Paws
I started writing this last week when I had to stay in Munich for a few days and was feeling a little down and depressed and wanted to write something lighthearted and fluffy.
Don't know exactly where this came from but it was so relaxing to write, today while waiting at the airport I had to continue and post it. I always thought it would be extremely difficult to write these 100 word thingies but it was fun to write this in chunks of exactly 100 words.
Title: White Paws (part 1 of possibly 2 or 3) Author: chris Rating: G Pairing: H/D what else? Length: exactly 900 so far Disclaimer: No, not mine. I only have a little fun with JKR's characters. Summary: Harry still walks the castle at night, even now in his seventh year back at Hogwarts.
Harry entered the Great Hall with a smile on his face. For the first time since coming back for seventh year he was glad to be here. A glance over the House tables brought another burst of happiness and sitting down at his own table for breakfast he smiled brightly at his friends. “Good Morning!”
Across from his seat Ginny sat up straighter at his cheerful greeting and smiled hopefully back at him. She had been very understanding when Harry had told her that he needed more time and space to sort himself out before they could resume their relationship.
Seeing Harry with a smile on his face first thing in the morning brought hope to Ginny Weasley’s heart. Though she had tried being supportive when Harry had ended their relationship with the excuse of protecting her, she couldn’t help but fear that it had been something else. When even after the last battle was over Harry made no move to resume what they had before she had become even more unsettled and suspicious.
At least now he was smiling again for the first time in ages and her hope that normal life could start up again at last grew.
Without even noticing the details of breakfast Harry started shuffling spoonfulls of cereal into his mouth while his eyes were busy watching another part of the Hall. A shy smile that was soon covered with a yawn across the tables caused his smile to grow even wider.
“Would you go for a walk with me after breakfast, Harry?”
Ginny’s question brought an abrupt halt to his daydreamings. She regarded him with her soft smile, full of hope and promises of a future together. A year ago this smile had made him the happiest man on earth now he inwardly winced.
“Gin, I’m sorry but I can’t go for a walk with you. There’s something else that I need to do today.”
The hopeful light in her eyes died with his answer and Harry felt a big stab of guilt inside. He knew what he did was wrong but a conversation over breakfast didn’t seem the right moment to end what they had.
First he wanted to reassure himself that last night had been real, not that it would change a thing in regard to Ginny whether it had been or not, but today he felt right in being selfish first.
Almost without thought Harry’s feet brought him to the place he had met the reason for his newly found good mood. On top of the Astronomy Tower, hiding from view in a small alcove Harry settled down to wait that the person he was hoping would come back here.
It was a warm day for mid of October and Harry enjoyed the sun on his face for the first time in ages. His thoughts wandered back to last night, to the unexpected but wonderful encounter he had right here in this place with a person he never would have thought.
Walking the castle at night in his Invisibility Cloak had once more become his favorite night time activity. Sleep was often disturbed by nightmares of himself dying again at Voldemort’s Avada Kedavra and so he preferred staying awake for as long as possible to evade them.
On this night his aimless wanderings had been disturbed by some screaching from Mrs. Norris followed by encouraging yells from Mr. Filch:
“Yes, my dear, catch them. Children out after curfew, pets running around, whatever it is will be sorry when we find them!”
And then a white kitten came running around the corner.
The kitten came to an abrupt halt as it slammed straight into Harry’s legs. It tried frantically to scramble backwards but the small white paws had been caught in the cloak and the struggling animal almost caused the cloak to be torn from Harry.
“Ssssht, little one. Everything’s ok.” Harry tried to whisper and calm down the frightened kitten but only when he grabbed it by the neck did the struggling stop.
Not wanting to be found by the caretaker Harry moved slowly along the corridor and up the first steps he came onto, those leading to the Astronomy Tower.
This was the first time he was at the place of Dumbledore’s death; he had avoided coming here before but holding the struggling cat steady he made his way up to the top.
As soon as he sat down in a corner of the room the animal tried to get away from him.
“No, you’ll only get yourself caught again.” Harry whispered and started petting the soft fur. “Stay a little while, I’ll let you go once the bad man is gone!”
The cat seemed to understand and made itself comfortable in Harry’s lap, it even started to purr softly.
“Who do you belong to, kitty? I’ve never seen you before. Your owner should look after you better and not let you wander around alone at night.” Without really noticing his actions Harry cuddled the small white cat closer to his chest and continued stroking the soft head. “But I am glad I found you, it’s nice to have someone here with me tonight.”
Soon Harry found himself talking about things he not even admitted to his friends: his continuing nightmares, the fear he had felt when he had faced Voldemort and how he now struggled with his daily life.
